Saving The Earth With Scrap Yard Security
Q: Does perimeter security have a connection with saving the environment and recycling?
A: Yes without a doubt and perhaps more than most of us realise.
The best way to explain this is by asking another question ... did you know that humans use up natural resources at an annual rate of 1.5 times what the earth can naturally provide for us? It's a staggering fact and a truly sobering one, bringing home the need for us to recycle ever more materials rather than keep plundering the earth's precious, dwindling resources.
Amongst the materials most needed for recycling is scrap metal.
The demand comes from the many sectors of manufacturing, particularly China. In 2009 China eclipsed Germany as the world's leading exporter of goods. In 2011 China was declared the world's top producer of goods bringing to an end the domination of the United States who enjoyed that #1 status for no less than 110 years. It's believed that industry and construction in China currently account for almost half of the country's GDP with mining and ore processing a major part of that. Having access to recycled metals is therefore a priority for China. Other countries of course have industrial manufacturing facilities too so recycled metal has become a 'in demand' product on a global scale.
The knock-on effect of the world's hunger for recycled metal is that it has become a target for theft. Our previous posts Scrap Metal Theft Security Solutions (2009) and Roof Top Security Reaches New Heights (2012) have broached the subject, covering in particular the problem of church roof theft.
The biggest target for metal theft is without doubt scrap yards where everything from wrecked cars to old bicycles, old garden benches to exercise machines is dumped and collected for recycling. Scrap yard security is therefore a big concern with yard owners asking if their current system is effective enough.
- Does it for example deter as well as detect intruders (eg. by way of electric fencing)?
- Does it have the option of remote monitoring?
The latter is crucial for when the yard is unmanned - the key time criminals are looking to take advantage. We have already helped one such yard in this respect, supplying them with GSM remote monitoring. Read further about how our range of products can provide effective scrap metal yard security.
BTW .... if you think recycling is a modern day concept, think again. Apparently, they were recycling as early as 400 BC, in the time of Plato in fact!
There have also been archeological discoveries that support this idea; ancient waste dumps have been identified yielding artefacts such as broken pottery and suggesting that people recognised the need to create new from old a very long time ago.
