Railways, Retail & The RAF - The Perimeter Detection Challenge

Today we take a look at the letter R in our ongoing series:  the A-Z Of Perimeter Security.

Railway Security

When it comes to railways there are many different aspects to the subject of security. Railways, after all, don't just carry people and commodities but they have an infrastructure which needs maintaining, repairing and protecting. Some of the elements of that infrastructure are valuable in their own right.

Railway infrastructure needs good security
Rather than delve into the detail of every aspect of railway security, the purpose of this post would be better served by quoting an actual case study that we were involved in.

The client was Dutch Rail and they were having problems with drums of copper wire being stolen from the back of trucks parked on site for maintenance work. The drums were indeed valuable and their theft was costing the railway dearly.

We were given very specific criteria for the functioning of any detection system that could be considered and our Technical Director came up with a prototype for a Mobile Detection System which used a Digital Voice Recorder to relay various messages which could be recorded by the operator. He travelled to the site in the Netherlands and the prototype was quickly installed for initial testing. Within 24 hours an attempted theft was detected and police arrived to find the would-be thieves still on site!

Retail distribution

The storage and transportation of retail goods is big business in today’s commercial world and retail distribution warehouses are amongst the largest and most targeted of buildings for theft. Retailers of everything from food to beverages, sportswear and furniture have to protect their products.

Warehouse in need of perimeter intrusion detection

Flexiguard™ is a well proven perimeter detection system that we have developed into four individual products and one of them was specially designed to provide the ideal solution for retailers with warehousing premises.

Many large retailers have installed the Flexiguard™ warehouse system including Next and Carlsberg-Tetley. You can read about these in more detail, what their security problem was and how we provided the solution in our special feature about warehouse intrusion detection.

RAF Base Security

Military base security has been a priority for Advanced Perimeter Systems Ltd for many years. With our products Electro-Fence™ and Flexiguard™ listed in the British Government Catalogue of Security Equipment, they have been selected as the product of choice for installation at many military bases in the UK and overseas including Royal Air Force bases.

These three applications are probably the most significant beginning with the letter R in our perimeter security vocabulary, but there are plenty more - royal palace security for instance and roof security systems. We will leave those to cover in another special feature, some other time :)
