Steel, Shipping, Schools, Scrap, Solar - A-Z Of Perimeter Security

Our series of posts on the A-Z of Perimeter Security continues today with the letter S. It is one of the most significant letters in our everyday vocabulary because so many words relevant to our industry begin with that letter.

If we look just at the types of site that are suited to electronic perimeter security protection, here are just a few examples all beginning with S:

Steel Plants

Global demand for crude steel is around 2 billion metric tonnes per year - a staggering figure! Steel plant security is therefore something that every major steel producer has to consider as a matter of priority. Our installer in India provided a perimeter security solution using our microwave detection system for a leading steel production plant in India.

Shipping Terminals

Shipping terminals are amongst some of the biggest outdoor, commercial sites in the world. Because valuable cargo is often stored in between transit, these sites can have major security issues if they do not have adequate perimeter security. Click here to read about the installation of our electric security fencing for Associated British Ports (owner and operator of 21 ports in the UK) at one of their sites 75 acres in size. There were two distinct zones for protection and the security was configured using our standard Electro-Fence™ combined with our stand alone electric fence system.

Schools and Educational Facilities

Whether it is a small school or a large university campus, security is a priority for several reasons: a) for the protection of the individuals who attend; b) against theft of building contents; c) against vandalism. Therefore, the site must have adequate security on its perimeter including access points. Our Electro-Fence™ was installed on the perimeter of a school in the North of England for just this purpose.

Scrap Metal Yards

Metal theft is a global problem and scrap metal and salvage yards are some of the biggest targets for this kind of theft. Our electric security fence system was installed at a Scottish scrap metal company whose premises were under regular attack by thieves. One of the contributing factors was that the site was unmanned so when the electric fence installation was carried out, a GSM remote monitoring system was also included.

Solar Parks

Theft and vandalism threatens the performance of many solar parks. The growing, global need for alternative energy therefore means that these sites need tight security. Every solar park has a different layout, size and perimeter type. So the perimeter security system which provides the solution will vary from one site to the next. The options we can offer are electric security fencing, fence detection alarms and microwave detection sensors. Sometimes all three will be combined in a fully integrated security system.
